How we help

The Life Skills Project (LSP) supports young people aged 16–26 as they prepare for independent adulthood. Using the ASDAN Moving On programme, developed specifically for young people taking their first steps towards independent living, particularly those with care experience, we help participants build the knowledge, confidence and practical skills needed for the future. Through the ASDAN Moving On journals, young people can achieve recognised learning outcomes that support progression into further education, training and employment.

The programme empowers them to make informed choices, build resilience and take greater control of their lives. Alongside accredited learning, LSP provides practical and emotional support tailored to each individual’s needs. Our flexible approach means support can be delivered at home or within the community, ensuring young people receive the guidance they need to thrive as they transition into adulthood. Referrals can be made by any professional working with young people in the Portsmouth area.

A Case Study

HV has been supported by the Life Skills Project since 2023, when he identified his goal of becoming a mechanic and securing an apprenticeship in the motor industry.

As part of his support, HV worked with his key worker to explore the different routes available to him and develop the skills and confidence needed to move towards his career goal. HV successfully completed his Level 3 Mechanics qualification in June 2024, which was an important step towards securing an apprenticeship.

Following the completion of his qualification, HV was supported to research suitable apprenticeship opportunities and complete applications. He applied for a number of positions and, in July 2024, was successful in securing a bodywork apprenticeship. HV started his apprenticeship in October 2024, allowing him to put the skills he had developed through his studies into practice while gaining valuable experience in the workplace.

Alongside his education and employment goals, HV continued to work with his key worker on developing the practical life skills needed to live independently.

In February 2025, HV was successful in securing a direct nomination for a Portsmouth City Council property. This was a significant milestone for HV and represented the opportunity to put the independent living skills he had developed into practice.

HV has now moved into his own flat and is successfully living independently. He continues to progress with his apprenticeship and has achieved the goals he originally identified when he joined the Life Skills Project.
